Safer Recruitment Training

Safer Recruitment Training

Recent press coverage and the commission of the Sex Abuse Inquiry have underlined the importance of implementing the safer recruitment process. The prevalence of child abuse is shocking and the difficulty of identifying those who pose a risk of harm to our children further exacerbates the problem.

Safer recruitment is an essential requirement of the Ofsted framework and Safeguarding Agenda. Safer recruitment training is designed to empower governors and all individuals who appoint any worker that will be involved in ‘regulated activity,’ to do their best to keep children safe in schools, colleges and nurseries (hereafter referred to as Schools). Schools are required to meet the safeguarding criteria as set out in the Ofsted Inspection Handbook. Failure to do so could negatively affect the Ofsted rating awarded to Schools.

The training contains some material relating to child abuse that some delegates may find upsetting. However, our accredited trainers, Sue Dormand and Julian King-Harris have received overwhelming positive feedback from over 400 people who have found the training to be extremely valuable and enlightening.

The training includes:

  • Patterns of offending behaviour and how to deal with allegations against staff
  • How to implement the correct recruitment and selection practices
  • How to deter and take steps to prevent people who pose a risk of harm to children from working in your organisation
  • Consideration of your policies, procedures and practices and how they should be implemented to minimise opportunities for abuse

Have you checked that the relevant staff in your School have valid Safer Recruitment Certificates i.e. they are less than 5 years old?

New statutory guidance has been released to include ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ and our training materials have been updated over the summer period by three accredited Safer Recruitment Trainers, Sue Dormand, Michele Robbins and Julian King-Harris, to reflect all relevant changes.

If you have new staff or staff that need a refresher, please book places quickly as there is limited availability.

Please note the online Safer Recruitment Training is no longer provided by the DfE. The NSPCC have taken over the provision but the online training will not be available until November 2014.

“I am in total awe of the way that you both conducted today so that ALL could participate and achieve. Never under-estimate the importance of what you do, for children first and foremost, but for adults too.”

With respect and gratitude, Jane Girle
Head Teacher, Penn Wood Primary School

“Sue co-delivered the most rewarding, productive and informative course on recruitment procedures and child protection I have ever attended during my career in Education and in Coaching. The energy and delivery could not be faulted: I found myself completely engaged in the content of the course. My only complaint is that the course was not long enough: I wanted to know and do more! I could not recommend this course highly enough.”

Director of Sport, Marish Academy Trust
